 Student Technicians
Community Use - Student Technician Job Description per FCPS:
Under supervision of the program manager for community use of facilities at a school (or faculty supervisor for the use - if present), ensures users of facilities receive assistance in the auditorium for sound and lighting requirements and other needs as required. This includes: lighting beyond house lights, use of microphones and sound system, and use of spotlights. Depending on needs of user organization, more than one student technician may be required.
Student Technicians are paid at hourly for the event - Minimum of 3 hours per event.

Typical Tasks
  • * Receive information from the building scheduler about needs of organization.
  • * Receive onsite direction from assigned point of contact of technical needs for auditorium. 
  • * Ensure the user receives all the necessary equipment and assistance if needed. 
  • * Demonstrate appropriate customer service to the organization. 
  • * Report any damage of equipment or facilities. 
  • * Able to access catwalk and operate board equipment in the auditorium booth (this includes lighting and sound setup).

Expectations
Student technicians are employees of FCPS and are therefore expected to meet employee standards such as punctuality, clear communication and consistent ability to demonstrate knowledge of their craft. 
  • This job is an after-school commitment with weekend scheduling, so a student must be available during these hours in order to take jobs as they come up. Some jobs can last up to 8 hours or multiple days.
  • Student technicians are responsible for their own transportation to and from the school. If transportation cannot be arranged, they must immediately notify the person of contact. 
  • Student technicians not only represent the UHS Drama program, but UHS as a whole and are required to behave professionally. If a student needs assistance, they must go to the building supervisor on duty for that event.

Why Should You Consider Becoming a Student Technician?

  1. Furthering your knowledge of theatrical spaces by working in real time and with customers who are in need of professional technicians. 
  2. Maintaining a job shows professionalism, work ethic, and looks great on college applications. 
  3. Beyond theater, the equipment used in the auditorium is used all over the world in various spaces. Technicians are always in demand beyond just the theatrical spaces. 
  4.  As FCPS employees, students will have access and responsibilities just like every other employee (time management, inputting worked hours, communicating with organizers and customers, etc). 
  5. Gain real world job experience in a safe and familiar environment. 
  6. Earn money doing something you love!

Application Process for Student Technicians
A student must complete the following in order to apply for a student technician position.
  1. Consult with Mr. Ward. Completion of auditorium training with Mr. Ward or another Student FCPS Employee.  This includes demonstration of microphone set up, light / sound board operation, auditorium housekeeping, use of our electrics, hanging of lights, focusing, etc.
  2. Students must complete the entire Non-Benefit Student Employee Application. getting signatures from both Mr. Ward and the VPA Administrator.  Mr. Ward can help you.

  3. Student will then need to visit FCPS Central Office - setting up a finger printing appointment Once the entire application process is complete.
